MobaXterm

MobaXterm is a remote computing workspace for Windows that replaces the usual collection of separate tools. Instead of running one program for SSH, another for file transfer and a third for remote graphical applications, it puts them all in one window with a tabbed interface and a shared session manager. Sessions of every supported type live in the same list, so a saved SSH host, an RDP machine and an FTP server all open the same way.

The connection side covers SSH, Telnet, Rlogin, RDP, VNC, XDMCP, FTP, SFTP and serial links, along with SSH tunnels, port forwarding and connections routed through a gateway host. An X11 server is built in, which means graphical Linux programs can be launched over an SSH connection and drawn on the Windows desktop without extra setup. When an SSH session opens, a file browser panel appears next to the terminal and shows the remote filesystem for drag and drop transfers and direct editing of remote files.

The Windows side ships with a local shell and the common Unix utilities compiled for Windows, including grep, awk, sed, rsync, wget and the ssh client itself, so scripts written for a Unix environment often run unchanged. A package manager and a plugin system let additional tools be added afterwards. Other conveniences include a built-in text editor with syntax highlighting, macro recording, password storage and the ability to type into several terminals at once.

The program suits system administrators, network engineers and developers who spend their day on remote Unix hosts but sit in front of a Windows machine. It is less relevant if the work is confined to Windows servers, where a plain RDP client is enough, or for anyone who has moved their Linux work into WSL and a modern terminal. Larger teams should also weigh the limits of the free edition, described below, since organizational deployment is tied to the paid version.
