TunnelBear is a VPN client that encrypts a device's internet connection and tunnels it through a server chosen from a list of countries. Once connected, the user's traffic appears to originate from that server's location, which hides the IP address from websites and network operators and lets a user reach content that is normally limited to a specific country. The app supports split tunneling, letting the user pick which apps route through the VPN and which use the normal connection.

The publisher states that traffic is encrypted with AES 256-bit encryption and that browsing activity is not logged, monitored, or sold. It also states that it commissions independent security audits of its apps on a regular basis and publishes the results, which is not something every VPN provider does.

The free tier is limited to 2GB of data per month, enough to try the service but not for regular daily use. Removing that cap requires the paid Unlimited plan, and a separate Teams plan adds centralized billing and admin controls for organizations with multiple users. Anyone who needs more than occasional, light VPN use should expect to pay for it.
