Bitwarden is a credential manager that keeps passwords, passkeys, secure notes, and other sensitive data in an encrypted vault accessible from browser extensions, desktop apps, mobile apps, and a web vault. Because the vault is end-to-end encrypted, the stored data is unreadable to Bitwarden itself, and syncing across devices happens automatically once a user signs in.

Beyond basic storage, Bitwarden includes a password generator, a password strength tester, built-in two-factor authentication codes, secure item sharing, and emergency access so a trusted contact can request vault access if needed. Family and organization plans add shared collections, user management, and reporting on weak or reused passwords.

For teams and enterprises, Bitwarden offers directory sync, single sign-on, granular administrative policies, and the option to self-host the server infrastructure instead of relying on Bitwarden's hosted service. A separate Secrets Manager product targets developers who need to manage API keys and other secrets used by applications.

The core client and server code is open source, which lets technically inclined users audit the encryption implementation or run their own self-hosted instance. Casual users who just want a password manager can ignore that aspect entirely and use the free hosted plan.
