Google Drive

Google Drive is a cloud storage and file synchronization service from Google. A desktop client for Windows keeps local folders mirrored with the cloud, so files stay available across devices and are recoverable if a local drive fails or is hit by ransomware (the desktop app includes ransomware detection). Files can be searched, previewed, and opened directly in Google's own editors (Docs, Sheets, Slides) or in over 100 other file formats, with support for real-time co-editing and commenting.

Sharing is handled through per-file and per-folder permissions (view, comment, or edit access), with options like link expiration dates for tighter control over who can reach a file and for how long. An integrated AI assistant (Gemini) can answer questions using the content stored in a user's Drive.

Every Google account gets a baseline of free storage (15 GB, shared with Gmail and Google Photos). Additional storage and business-oriented features (larger pooled storage, admin controls, data-loss prevention, encryption options) are sold through paid Google Workspace or Google One plans. It suits anyone who wants cross-device file access and collaborative editing without managing their own file server, though it depends on an internet connection and a Google account, and is not a local backup tool in the traditional imaging sense.
