Directory Opus

Directory Opus from GP Software is a file manager for Windows that is designed to be used instead of Explorer rather than alongside it. The main window can be split into two panes with independent folder trees, and each pane holds several tabs, so moving files between distant folders does not require juggling separate windows. Copy and move jobs are queued rather than run all at once, which keeps large transfers from competing with each other for disk throughput.

Beyond plain browsing, the program bundles the tools that usually require separate utilities. It reads and writes Zip, 7-Zip and RAR archives as if they were folders, connects to FTP servers, finds duplicate files, compares and synchronizes folder pairs, calculates and exports folder sizes, and includes a viewer plus a metadata editor for images and documents. Files can be organized with color labels, star ratings, tags and free-text descriptions, and the flat-view, filtering and grouping options make it possible to work across a whole folder tree at once. Search can fall back on the Windows Search index for fast results.

Configurability is the main selling point and also the main hurdle. Toolbars, menus, hotkeys and hundreds of colors and fonts can be redefined, and a full scripting interface (VBScript, JScript and compatible engines) allows custom commands and dialogs. That depth rewards people who move a lot of files daily, such as photographers, developers and administrators, and it is also why the program is worth trying at length before buying.

It runs only on 64-bit Windows 7 through 11; ARM builds are not offered. Anyone who wants a free tool, or who only occasionally opens a folder, will find it oversized for the job; a lighter free file manager is the more sensible choice there.
