Barracuda SecureEdge Agent

Barracuda SecureEdge Agent is the desktop client half of a managed network security service. Rather than working on its own, it registers a device with an organization's SecureEdge tenant and builds an encrypted tunnel to one of Barracuda's global points of presence, or to a private appliance the company runs on its own premises. Once connected, the administrator's policy decides which internal applications the device may reach and what happens to its outbound internet traffic.

The main job of the agent is to replace a conventional remote access VPN with a Zero Trust model. Instead of dropping the machine onto the corporate network, each request is checked against the identity of the signed-in user and the state of the device before a connection to a specific application is allowed. The same tunnel also carries ordinary web traffic, so the service can apply DNS and URL filtering, malware scanning, and inspection of encrypted connections without a separate proxy client. Barracuda publishes agents for Windows, macOS, Linux, Chromebooks, iOS and Android, so a mixed fleet can be handled through the same console.

This is enterprise infrastructure software, and the installer is only half of the picture. Without an existing SecureEdge subscription and a tenant to enroll into, the agent has nothing to connect to. It suits IT departments and managed service providers looking to consolidate remote access, web filtering and branch connectivity into one service, and administrators who want central policy control over devices that spend most of their time outside the office.

Home users and small offices that simply want an encrypted connection or a privacy tool should look elsewhere. This is not a consumer VPN: there is no server list to pick from, no anonymity purpose, and every setting comes from a corporate policy the user cannot change.
