Amazon Kindle

Amazon Kindle is a reading application that gives Windows users access to the e-books, comics, and manga purchased or borrowed through Amazon's Kindle store. Titles open directly in the app rather than through a separate file manager, and reading progress, bookmarks, highlights, and notes stay synced with the Kindle apps on phones, tablets, and Kindle e-readers.

Beyond plain text, the app renders comics and manga with panel-by-panel Comixology Guided View navigation, offers high-resolution image zooming, an in-app dictionary, and adjustable fonts and page layout. Personal documents such as PDFs or EPUBs can be dragged into the app to read alongside store purchases, and titles bought from Audible play back as audiobooks.

This app is a ground-up replacement for the long-running Kindle for PC program, which Amazon shut down at the end of June 2026 after the old software spent over a decade built on outdated 32-bit technology. The new version is distributed exclusively through the Microsoft Store rather than as a standalone installer, and unlike its predecessor it stores downloaded books in a system-managed folder that users cannot redirect or browse directly.

It suits readers who already buy books through Amazon and want to read them on a PC. It is not a general-purpose e-book reader: it mainly opens Kindle-format content plus a limited set of sideloaded personal documents, and it requires signing in with a free Amazon account tied to the user's library.
